Police City Council faces controversy over street naming
A controversy has emerged in Police, Poland, following a City Council decision to name Nowosiedlecka Street after Stanisław Szymaszek, the town's first mayor after 1989.
Councilor Anna Sobańska expressed surprise over the decision, noting that reports surfaced after the unanimous vote suggesting that documents held by the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) confirm Szymaszek's past cooperation with the communist-era Security Service (SB). Sobańska questioned why the council was not provided with this information prior to the vote.
The West Pomeranian Voivode, Adam Rudawski, stated that the resolution is currently being reviewed for compliance with laws prohibiting the promotion of communism or other totalitarian systems. If doubts persist, the regional government may request a formal opinion from the IPN to determine how to proceed.
