Police Commander honored for saving toddler via CPR

Bay Harbor Islands Police Commander Tomas Rego was honored during a town council meeting for saving the life of a one-year-old girl. The incident occurred on July 3, 2025, while Rego was off duty and conducting an additional patrol near the Indian Creek canal.

Rego responded to the screams of a woman and discovered the child, Noa, unconscious and not breathing after she had been pulled from a pool at a waterfront home. Rego, a trained CPR instructor, performed two rounds of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which successfully revived the toddler.

The child’s mother, Tiffany Leaf, described the event as a “big miracle.” Noa, who is now two years old, is in good health, and the family has maintained a close relationship with Rego following the rescue.
