Police conduct traffic enforcement blitzes in Australia and New Zealand
Police in Australia and New Zealand reported varying results from weekend traffic enforcement operations focused on alcohol and drug impairment.
In Australia’s Central North Police District, Superintendent Gerard Lawson noted that drivers behaved more responsibly than those in metropolitan areas. During a Labour Day long weekend blitz, police conducted over 1,500 random breath tests, resulting in zero positive alcohol tests and six positive drug tests. However, two fatalities were reported over the weekend, though the Western Region recorded no deaths.
In Southland, New Zealand, police expressed disappointment following a high number of drink-driving offences. Between Friday and Sunday, authorities apprehended 20 individuals for drink driving across Invercargill, Tuatapere, Gore, and Te Anau. Acting Senior Sergeant Blair Shirley emphasized the importance of planning sober transport, noting that police conducted 2,000 breath tests during the period.
