Dominican Republic Police Director and Deputy Resolve Conflict

The Director General of the National Police, Major General Ernesto Rafael Rodríguez García, and Deputy Millys Martínez have reached an agreement to resolve the recent conflict in Elías Piña province. The incident, which gained significant attention after videos circulated showing Martínez being handcuffed by police officers during a confrontation in Comendador, led to protests and a walkout by several legislators in the Chamber of Deputies.

During a meeting at the police director's office, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue, mutual respect, and institutional collaboration. While the conflict has been declared "overcome," the National Police has maintained that investigations into the specific circumstances of the incident continue. General Martín Tapia Sánchez has been tasked with leading these inquiries to determine if any officers committed abuses of authority.

The resolution follows intense political pressure, including condemnation from Chamber of Deputies President Alfredo Pacheco, who characterized the event as an attempted arrest of a legislator. Members of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) also intervened to facilitate the meeting, aiming to prevent further damage to the institutional relationship between the legislature and the police force.
