Police dog Trina locates missing elderly man in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

A 70-year-old man from Oahu was found safe in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Monday evening following an extensive search. The man had been missing for more than 24 hours and was considered endangered.

Search efforts involved police, national park personnel, and aerial assistance from a Hawaii Fire Department helicopter. K9 Trina, a 3-year-old Swedish Labrador Retriever, and her handler, Officer Christopher Ross, successfully located the man on a trail approximately two miles from his unoccupied rental vehicle.

The man was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for treatment of dehydration and exposure. This marks the second time in two months that Trina has located a missing person, having previously found an endangered teenager in Waikoloa.
