Police drop staff‑abuse complaints against lawmaker Kang Sun‑woo

South Korean police concluded investigations of nine criminal complaints against independent lawmaker Kang Sun‑woo and decided not to forward any case for prosecution. The complaints, filed by the citizen group 서민민생대책위원회, alleged violations of the Labor Standards Act, perjury before the National Assembly, obstruction of business, abuse of authority and coercion. Police said former aides refused to give statements, making it difficult to pinpoint specific illegal acts and to determine whether the alleged coercion met the legal threshold.

The prosecution also judged that the perjury allegation lacked jurisdiction because a formal parliamentary complaint had not been filed according to Assembly procedures. The decision, announced by the Seoul Gangseo Police Station in April, was disclosed publicly in late March. While the staff‑abuse case was closed, Kang remains in custody on separate charges of receiving a 100 million‑won donation from former Seoul councilor Kim Kyung and is awaiting trial.
