Police Hospital faces leadership vacuum and staffing shortages
The Police Hospital in South Korea has operated without a permanent director for a year following a series of personnel controversies. The former director was dismissed in June after being suspended for a drunk driving incident that occurred in late 2023.
Further complications arose when the interim director appointed to fill the vacancy was also found to have a history of drunk driving. Following criticism regarding the appointment, the police agency replaced the interim official in December 2023. A recruitment process for a new permanent director is currently underway, with interviews expected in mid-September.
The prolonged leadership vacancy has coincided with significant medical staffing shortages. As of late August, the hospital reported 52 vacancies out of a total of 678 positions, including nine specialists and 31 nursing staff members. These shortages have resulted in a reduction of 69 hours per week in medical treatments, procedures, and examinations.
