Police Impersonation Scam Using Google Meet Targets Jakarta Residents

Authorities in Jakarta warned that a fraud scheme circulating on Google Meet pretended to be an investigation by the Metro Jaya Police, the South Jakarta District Prosecutor's Office and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK). The perpetrators asked participants to scan QR codes and provide banking details, claiming the information was needed for a drug‑related raid. Police officials, including Kombes Pol Budi Hermanto of Polda Metro Jaya, confirmed that the police never conduct investigations, arrests or searches via video‑call platforms and do not request personal banking data. The public was urged not to share personal or banking information, OTPs or PINs, and to report any suspicious contacts to the nearest police station or the 110 hotline.

The warning highlights a growing trend of video‑conference scams that exploit official logos and names to create a false sense of authority, aiming to steal money from victims.
