Police in Brazil respond to separate incidents involving elderly citizens

In Caxias, Maranhão, a 66-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of abandoning and mistreating his 96-year-old mother. Authorities discovered the victim locked alone in an unsanitary residence containing accumulated waste and animal carcasses. Investigations suggest the woman relied on food donations from neighbors to survive while her son allegedly misappropriated her financial benefits. The victim was hospitalized by emergency medical services, and the suspect remains in custody.
