Police in China crack down on professional fraud schemes
Authorities in China have successfully intercepted two distinct fraudulent schemes targeting individuals through deceptive tactics.
In Shanghai, police used big data to dismantle a professional ‘staged accident’ ring. One suspect, identified as Zhu, was apprehended for orchestrating over 200 minor traffic collisions across districts including Huangpu, Xuhui, and Pudong. By targeting vehicles during lane changes, Zhu accumulated over 600,000 yuan in illegal proceeds through frequent, low-value insurance claims that often went unnoticed by drivers.
In Hangzhou, a job seeker fell victim to a sophisticated online interview scam. Fraudsters posing as recruiters induced a woman to share her screen and provide personal identification. They subsequently used her credentials to make unauthorized purchases totaling over 40,000 yuan, including high-end liquor and electronics, via a food delivery platform. Police managed to intercept the stolen goods at a courier transit station within three hours of the report.
