Police in Fiji and Vanuatu struggle with cannabis cultivation and distribution
Law enforcement agencies in Fiji and Vanuatu are reporting significant challenges in combating cannabis cultivation and trafficking. In Fiji, police uncovered drug farms in the Northern Division containing over 1,600 suspected marijuana plants, specifically in the Vesivuru and Nawi farming areas. These operations led to the arrest of a 38-year-old man believed to be a farm owner, as well as other arrests involving possession and suspected methamphetamine in the Southern Division.
On the island of Epi in Vanuatu, authorities are struggling with the widespread cultivation and sale of cannabis. Senior Sergeant Allan Joseph reported that marijuana is frequently concealed in kava bags and transported by ship to Port Vila. Police face difficulties due to the island's size, limited community cooperation, and potential collusion between transporters and ship crews. While awareness campaigns have been conducted with local leaders, enforcement remains a major concern.
