Electric scooter safety risks highlighted by new study
A recent study analyzing accident data from England and Wales indicates that electric scooter users face significantly higher risks of severe injury compared to motorcyclists. Research led by Dr. David Bodansky found that e-scooter riders are over three times more likely to suffer traumatic brain injuries or vascular damage. The study noted that while bone fracture risks were lower than those for cyclists or motorcyclists, the severity of head and internal organ injuries was notably higher.
Contributing factors include the small wheel size of e-scooters, which reacts violently to obstacles, and a critically low rate of helmet use; only 5.9 percent of users in the study wore protective headgear. Experts are calling for improved vehicle stability, mandatory safety training, and stricter legislation regarding helmet use and operator licensing.
In separate incidents, a 32-year-old man in Apcon, Hungary, remains in critical condition and in a medically induced coma after crashing his electric scooter into a fence. The accident resulted in severe skull fractures and brain hemorrhaging. He was transported to the Honvéd Hospital via rescue helicopter.
