Regional authorities increase traffic safety measures for new school year

As the new school year begins across various Balkan and Central European regions, authorities are implementing measures to ensure student safety and manage increased traffic.

In Croatia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is intensifying traffic supervision in school zones, particularly in Međimurje, where over 1,100 first-graders will be commuting. This follows a period in 2025 where 46 children were injured in traffic accidents in the region. Similarly, in Montenegro, police are conducting the ‘Live, Don’t Hurry’ campaign, using drones and radars to monitor speed and alcohol consumption on major routes during the weekend.

In Serbia, police have issued warnings regarding the legal obligations for electric scooter riders, emphasizing that they must wear helmets and follow specific speed limits. In Poland, various local initiatives are underway, including police-led safety education for first-graders and inspections of school buses in the Wałbrzych region to ensure technical compliance. Additionally, in Żywiec, police provided school supplies to children in foster care to support their return to education.

Other regional updates include financial aid for students in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the opening of a new school building in Novi Travnik, which serves 432 students.
