Police intervene at anti-asylum center protest in Kesteren

Police and the Mobile Unit (ME) intervened during a protest against a potential asylum seeker center (azc) in Kesteren, Netherlands. A group of several hundred people gathered near the village hall on Nedereindsestraat, where the situation escalated as fireworks were set off.

Authorities reported that fireworks were thrown toward officers and heavy explosions were heard. In response, police conducted a charge to clear the square around 21:00. Reports indicate that seven individuals were arrested: four in connection with the use of fireworks and three for resisting arrest.

The unrest in Kesteren follows recent riots in the nearby village of Opheusden, which resulted in fourteen arrests. In response to the ongoing tensions, the municipality of Neder-Betuwe has established an emergency ordinance and a safety risk area for Opheusden.
