Police investigate death of Polish man in Mainz

German prosecutors have identified the victim in a death investigation in Mainz. The deceased, a 39-year-old Polish citizen without a permanent residence in Germany, was found on the staircase of an apartment building on Münsterstraße on October 23, 2026.

Investigators initially faced difficulties identifying the man as he carried no identification and witnesses could not recognize him. Due to the nature of the injuries and the circumstances of the discovery, authorities suspected third-party involvement.

A 41-year-old Polish national was arrested on suspicion of causing fatal injuries and was subsequently placed in temporary custody by a court in Alzey. Prosecutors have confirmed that the victim and the suspect were known to each other, though the exact nature of their relationship or whether a conflict occurred remains under investigation.
