Swiss police investigate discovery of human remains in the Rhine

Swiss authorities have launched an investigation after human remains were discovered in sacks in the Rhine near Stein, Aargau. The discovery occurred on the morning of Sunday, October 25, 2026, when three men spotted a sack in the water and pulled it ashore, finding a human leg inside.

Subsequent searches involving boats and police divers led to the recovery of additional sacks containing parts of a male body. Police officials have stated that the circumstances suggest a homicide. The identity of the deceased has not yet been fully established, though a police spokesperson noted a potential connection to a nearby asylum seeker center.

The Aargau Institute of Forensic Medicine is currently examining the remains to determine the cause of death and facilitate identification. The public prosecutor's office has opened a criminal investigation, and the Aargau Cantonal Police are appealing to witnesses who may have observed suspicious activity near the riverbanks.
