Police investigate separate homicide cases in Taiwan and China

Authorities in Taiwan and China have reported significant developments in separate homicide cases.

In Taiwan, the body of a missing foreign woman was discovered at the NTC National Trade Center in Taichung. Following an investigation by the Wanhua Police Department and the Taichung District Prosecutors Office, a 43-year-old man surnamed Wu has been detained. Prosecutors believe there is strong evidence of murder and have applied for his detention, citing risks of flight and destruction of evidence.

In China, the Guiyang Intermediate People's Court has concluded a case involving a man surnamed Zhang who murdered his wife in 2019. After a domestic dispute, Zhang killed his wife, dismembered and boiled her body, and disposed of the remains in a mountainous area. For six years, he impersonated his wife on social media to claim she had left him for an affair. The crime was uncovered through DNA matching of a skull found in 2019. While Zhang was sentenced to life imprisonment, the Guiyang People's Procuratorate has filed an appeal, arguing the sentence is “obviously inappropriate” given the brutality of the crime.
