Police investigations launched in Brazilian municipalities over digital offenses
Authorities in Cassilândia and Nova Olímpia, Brazil, have launched investigations into various forms of digital offenses and hate speech.
In Cassilândia, the Civil Police reported a surge in formal criminal complaints following a wave of defamation, libel, and false content spread via social media and WhatsApp. Victims, including local business owners and Councilman Max Estevo, have come forward to seek criminal sanctions rather than financial compensation. Police Delegate Dr. Rodrigo de Freitas stated that individuals who share defamatory content may face the same legal penalties as the original authors if they cannot identify the source.
In Nova Olímpia, the Civil Police are investigating recordings that contain racist insults, political attacks, and statements defending sexual violence against women. A teenage suspect and the victims have been identified. The investigation is moving toward the testimony phase, with victims and witnesses scheduled to provide statements to clarify the circumstances of the recordings.
