Police issue warnings over impersonation and phishing scams

Law enforcement agencies in Trinidad and Tobago and the United Kingdom are warning the public about increasing scams involving the impersonation of police officers.

In Trinidad and Tobago, the RCIPS reported a rise in video call phishing scams. Suspects, often wearing face coverings, pose as police or immigration officials. They may claim a victim’s debit card has been tampered with to trick them into clicking suspicious links. One victim has already reported cash being stolen from their bank account following such an interaction.

In the United Kingdom, Surrey Police warned of scammers using spoofing software to mirror legitimate non-emergency numbers, such as the 101 service. These criminals aim to trick individuals into sharing personal information or transferring money. Authorities emphasize that police will never call unexpectedly to request bank details or ask citizens to withdraw money or purchase high-value items as part of an investigation.
