Dominican Republic police killing of twins sparks investigation

Two 16-year-old twins, Randy Omar Borges Jiménez and Omar Randy Borges Jiménez, died during a police intervention in the Mendoza sector of Santo Domingo Este on Wednesday, October 21. The incident has sparked intense controversy between the National Police and the victims' family.

The National Police reported that the teenagers were sought under five arrest warrants for alleged criminal activities and that officers recovered two firearms—a Taurus 9mm and a Glock 19—during the operation. However, the family, led by paternal grandmother Gleny Jiménez, alleges the teenagers were shot while sleeping. The family further claims that officers planted the weapons at the scene to simulate a shootout and used tear gas during the raid.

Human rights representatives and neighbors have called for a formal investigation by the Public Ministry to determine if the deaths constitute extrajudicial executions. The incident contributes to a rising toll of police-related deaths in the country, with at least 37 people reported killed in similar circumstances during October.
