Police officer charged with ammunition possession in Couva
A police officer in Trinidad and Tobago has been charged with possession of ammunition following an intelligence-led operation in Couva.
On the evening of August 17, 2026, officers from the Central Division intercepted a black Nissan Sylphy on the Southern Main Road. The occupant, identified as PC Avinash Kussie, was off duty at the time. During a search of the vehicle, officers allegedly discovered a black plastic bag containing ten rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Following an investigation, a file was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on August 24. On August 25, the DPP instructed that a charge be filed against PC Kussie. While searches of the officer's residence and his locker at the Couva Police Station yielded no illegal items, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) reiterated its commitment to accountability, stating that no officer is above the law.
