Police officer detained with suspected marijuana in Burnside

A 38-year-old police officer has been detained following the discovery of a significant quantity of suspected marijuana at a checkpoint in Burnside, Coronie district. During a routine inspection of the officer's vehicle, authorities discovered two suitcases containing multiple plastic-wrapped, compressed blocks of dried leaves, stems, and seeds that strongly resemble cannabis.

Following consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the officer was remanded in custody. The vehicle and the suspected narcotics were seized. The case has been transferred to the Police Affairs Investigation Department (Onderzoek Politiezaken) for further inquiry.

In a separate incident at the same Burnside checkpoint on Sunday evening, three other individuals—an 18-year-old from Guyana and two Surinamese nationals aged 39 and 42—were also arrested for possession of plant materials suspected to be cannabis. They have been remanded in custody pending investigation by the Narcotics Brigade.
