Police officer murdered in Drama, Greece sparks outcry over domestic violence

A 40‑year‑old female police officer was found half‑naked in a basement in the city of Drama, Greece, with more than eight stab wounds. A knife recovered at the scene is believed to be the weapon. Her husband, identified as the suspected perpetrator, was later found dead with a gunshot wound to the head.

The victim had reportedly been trying to leave an abusive marriage for years, having sought a transfer to another police precinct and attending psychological counseling. In a recent interview she said, “After 20 years I am finally free.” Friends described the husband as a normally calm person with no prior history of violence.

The murder has prompted the Greek Federation of Women (POEDIN) to demand an end to domestic violence, stating that “injured women come to hospitals and stay silent.” POEDIN president Michalis Giannakos called for immediate reporting of such incidents and for stronger state protection for victims.
