Police Officer Killed in Corumbá Sparks Calls for Security Action

On 30 March, 32‑year‑old police officer Marcelo Pimenta da Silva was shot dead while pursuing a heavily armed criminal group in the centre‑America neighbourhood of Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul. The officer was hit in the chest and arm, was taken to Santa Casa hospital and died shortly after. Police investigations recorded that one suspect died during the operation, another was arrested and a third remains at large; two rifles, two pistols, a revolver, large amounts of ammunition and a Fiat Argo used in the attack were seized.

The killing prompted a motion of mourning in the state legislature, where deputies demanded a joint federal‑state response to organised‑crime factions operating in border towns. They cited recent federal‑state investment of 522 police vehicles and equipment, urging that similar resources be directed to frontier municipalities. A funeral on 2 April drew about 800 mourners, with police, fire‑service and military honors.

State officials said a task force has been deployed to reinforce security in Corumbá and continue the search for the remaining suspect.
