Police officer killed in Savar after intervening in assault

A Special Branch (SB) sub-inspector, Md. Altaf Hossain, was beaten to death in the Aminbazar Bordshee area of Savar, Dhaka, after intervening to protect an elderly rickshaw driver.

On Saturday night, a group of youths in a private car reportedly assaulted an elderly rickshaw driver. When Hossain, a 58-year-old officer stationed at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Special Branch, attempted to protest the assault, the group attacked him. Reports indicate that the attackers summoned additional individuals, totaling approximately 15 to 20 people, who then stormed a factory where Hossain had sought refuge. During the attack, the group allegedly vandalized machinery and equipment.

Hossain and his son, Md. Arif, were severely beaten. Hossain was declared dead upon arrival at Enam Medical College Hospital, while his son remains under medical treatment. Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Saiful Alam, confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the killing.
