Police officer Rakibul Hasan detained over leaked audio

Rakibul Hasan, the former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Dhaka Cantonment Police Station, has been taken into custody by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB). His detention follows the viral spread of an audio recording in which he allegedly makes controversial remarks regarding the government, the military, and the police force.

In the leaked audio, Hasan reportedly discusses the potential return of Sheikh Hasina and questions the effectiveness of the police. He also makes claims regarding the political leanings of senior police officials and alleges corruption involving bribery in police appointments.

Following the incident, Hasan was initially withdrawn from his post at the Cantonment station for ‘administrative reasons.’ A three-member committee has been formed by the DMP to investigate the authenticity and content of the audio. Additionally, a legal notice has been issued by a lawyer demanding a transparent investigation into whether the remarks constitute sedition.
