Police officer rescues lost hikers in Zagarise

Alessandro Mancuso, an off-duty police officer with the Crotone Police Headquarters, rescued a lost couple in the mountainous area of Zagarise. While on a hiking trip during his day off, Mancuso heard cries for help coming from the woods.

The couple, from Isola di Capo Rizzuto, had entered a rugged area with no cellular coverage and had only managed a brief emergency call to 112 before losing contact. Utilizing his knowledge of local trails, Mancuso located the hikers near a cliff after approximately one hour of searching.

Mancuso escorted the pair to a safe location at the ‘Orme nel Parco’ rest area and notified emergency services. His timely intervention allowed the Fire Brigade to recall their helicopter and prevented the deployment of additional ground search teams from the Cacciatori di Calabria. The Coisp police union praised the officer, stating that his sense of duty prevented a potentially tragic outcome.
