Police Operation on Mato Grosso‑Goiás Border Leaves Two Dead
Police units of the 5th Regional Command and the GAP (Special Support Group) carried out a patrol on the Mato Grosso‑Goiás border after receiving a tip that a vehicle was transporting drugs. The officers stopped a silver Volkswagen Voyage near the ring‑road bridge at Pontal do Araguaia. During the attempt to board the vehicle, the occupants opened fire, resulting in a shoot‑out. Two men, Wagner Brito de Souza, 38, and Carlos Willian Silva Gomes, 39, both residents of Barra do Garças, were fatally wounded despite medical assistance by the fire department. The incident blocked traffic on the ring‑road segment, forcing truck and trailer drivers to divert through the towns of Pontal do Araguaia, Barra do Garças and Aragarças. The confrontation is part of ongoing operations against drug trafficking and organized crime in the Araguaia corridor, which has seen recent seizures of cocaine, marijuana and large money‑laundering investigations.
