Balaji faces multiple corruption allegations, notably a reported Rs 400 crore irregularity in transformer procurement during his tenure as Electricity Minister, and charges of bribery in government transport recruitment. The Enforcement Directorate and the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti‑Corruption are probing money‑laundering and other offences, and police are also looking for his brother Ashok, who is implicated in the same cases and is out on bail. The crackdown is seen as intensifying after a change of state government.

The inquiry adds fresh political pressure on Balaji and highlights the broader anti‑corruption drive in Tamil Nadu.
