Heimssýn challenges President of Iceland over EES protocol signing
The organization Heimssýn has formally challenged the President of Iceland to refuse the signing of laws regarding Protocol 35 of the EEA Agreement. Haraldur Ólafsson, chairman of Heimssýn, stated that the proposed changes are unconstitutional and infringe upon the constitutional independence of Icelandic authorities.
Heimssýn argues that Alþingi lacks the mandate to approve these changes and suggests that legislative action should be suspended until the EFTA Court delivers a ruling on the matter. The organization has submitted a formal memorandum to Alþingi detailing these concerns. The legal implications are further underscored by a 58-page review by former EFTA Court President Carl Baudenbacher, which provides detailed arguments regarding the legal impact of the protocol.
