Police rescue 61 animals from abuse in Vélez-Málaga

Spanish National Police have rescued 61 animals, including 29 dogs and 32 cats, from a residence in Vélez-Málaga following reports of excessive noise and foul odors from neighbors. During a search of the property, which belongs to the suspect's 80-year-old mother, officers discovered animals living in extreme filth and suffering from malnutrition and serious illnesses, such as Leishmaniasis and Parvovirus.

Investigators reported that some animals were being kept in complete darkness inside kitchen furniture. A 53-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of continuous animal abuse with aggravating factors, including cruelty and instances resulting in death. Authorities suggest the woman may have been suffering from Noah's syndrome, a compulsive animal hoarding disorder, after collecting stray, abandoned, or lost pets without providing basic care.

The rescued animals are currently under the care of protection centers in the province of Málaga. Authorities have issued an urgent call for the adoption of these animals, particularly cats, noting that adoption rates for felines are significantly lower than those for dogs.
