Police Scotland reopens Mohamed Al Fayed sexual assault probe
Police Scotland has reopened its investigation into sexual‑assault allegations against the late Mohamed Al Fayed after a new witness came forward. The probe focuses on an alleged attempted rape at Al Fayed’s Balnagown Estate in Easter Ross, Highland, dating to 1991 and reported by former personal assistant Sophia Stone.
More than 400 accusations of sexual misconduct against Al Fayed, spanning 1977‑2014, have been recorded, including rape, human‑trafficking and forced abortions. Police Scotland previously completed an inquiry into a “non‑recent sexual assault” at Balnagown in 2024 and now says “further investigation is ongoing. It would be inappropriate to comment further.”
Harrods publicly condemned the claims, describing itself as “utterly appalled” and setting up a compensation scheme for former employees who say they were attacked. The Metropolitan Police’s Operation Cornpoppy is also investigating related victims, having been contacted by 155 complainants and questioning four individuals so far.
