Police seek public help in Katja Miinalainen disappearance case

Helsinki police have issued an exceptional request for assistance from outdoor enthusiasts in Lapland regarding the disappearance of Katja Miinalainen. Miinalainen is believed to be a victim of homicide occurring in late August 2022. The investigation suspects Mika Moring, 54, of being a serial predator.

Authorities believe the potential crime scene is located in the Muonio region, specifically between the Muotkavaara and Tiurajärvi areas. Police are asking anyone traveling in the Muonio vicinity to monitor the terrain and waterways for any unusual findings, such as clothing or bones.

Investigators have previously conducted searches in areas including Jerisjärvi, Äkäsjärvi, Äkäsjoki, Aakenus, and Levikairantie, with assistance from the Finnish Defence Forces and the Border Guard. Most recent searches took place in early August in the Tepasto area of Kittilä.

Police advise that if anyone finds a bone, they should photograph it next to a recognizable object, such as a shoe, to help determine its size and whether it is human or animal. Findings should be reported via email to the Helsinki Police Department's violent crime investigation unit.
