Vienna fraudster arrested after swindling €20,000 from motorists

A 41‑year‑old man was arrested in Vienna’s First Police District on 16 July after allegedly committing more than 70 fraud offences between 23 April and 16 July. The suspect pretended to be locked out of his car in underground garages and commercial premises, claiming that his wallet, phone and documents were inside the vehicle and that he needed urgent travel to Salzburg. He persuaded victims to hand over cash ranging from €100 to €600, promising immediate repayment. Police say the total damage amounts to roughly €20,000. The perpetrator was caught “in the act” after a tip‑off and is now in custody pending prosecution.

Police have warned the public to remain vigilant against similar scams, urging anyone approached with such a story to contact the Landstraße police command.
