Police seize $1.5 million cash hidden in NSW Toyota Hiace

New South Wales police stopped a Toyota Hiace on the Hume Highway near Yass during a routine breath‑alcohol and drug test. Inspectors found the rear seat split into two, revealing a suitcase and shopping bags stuffed with cash estimated at 1.5 million AUD (about 28 billion VND). The vehicle, together with several mobile phones, was seized for forensic analysis.

The 24‑year‑old driver and his 37‑year‑old passenger were arrested and charged with handling property believed to be proceeds of crime worth more than $100,000. After an initial refusal, they were later granted bail under court‑imposed conditions and appeared in Goulburn Local Court earlier this year. Police continue to investigate the source of the cash and whether the case is linked to other criminal activity.
