Police sergeant arrested in Berbice license fraud probe

A police sergeant at the Springlands Police Station Licensing and Certifying Office in Berbice has been placed under close arrest following an investigation into alleged license fraud. The probe is being conducted by the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU).

During the investigation, SOCU officers intercepted a vehicle driven by the sergeant, discovering a bag containing 94 driver competence letters for various vehicle classes and individuals, along with $564,000 and US$40. A subsequent search of the certifying office uncovered two additional books containing 61 competencies issued to individuals who had not completed the required practical examinations.

The sergeant reportedly claimed that the fraudulent activity involved several senior officers within the force and alleged that he was required to pay out over $1.5 million in weekly bribes.
