Police Shoot Dead Berlin CSD Suspect Abdul B., Father Says He Missed Him

Abdul B., a 21‑year‑old suspected attacker of Berlin's Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade, was shot dead by police in a Spandau garden after being identified as the perpetrator. Earlier, a Berlin court had sentenced him to a year and ten months on probation for preparing a serious state‑endangering violent act, applying juvenile law on the basis of a presumed "reifeverzögerung" (delayed maturity).

Extremism adviser Thomas Mücke of the Violence Prevention Network described the suspect as giving a very calm, careful and friendly impression, which made it difficult to assess his radicalisation. Abdul B.'s father, Tawfik Ballout, who is currently in Lebanon, told Der Spiegel that they spoke normally the day before, that his son missed him and wished to return to Lebanon.

The incident has prompted calls to end the practice of applying juvenile law to radicalised offenders, arguing that the maturity‑delay assumption should no longer be accepted for such cases.
