Dominican Republic Police Director warns criminals to surrender or face pursuit

The Director of the Dominican Republic's National Police, Major General Ernesto Rodríguez García, has announced a reinforced security strategy aimed at reversing public fear of crime. He emphasized that the institution's goal is to ensure that criminals, rather than citizens, fear the authority. Rodríguez García warned fugitives that they must either surrender or face pursuit regardless of their location, stating that the police will use the full power of the state to maintain order.

Statistics provided by the institution show that 116 individuals have surrendered voluntarily between August 17 and September 25. The Director also addressed recent controversies regarding lethal force during police operations. While Justice Minister Antonio Peralta Romero stated that lethal force is only justified when no other alternative exists to protect life, Rodríguez García defended the actions of officers, asserting that police have a right to preserve their own lives when facing armed criminals.

Recent operations have resulted in several high-profile incidents, including the deaths of individuals identified as wanted criminals during police interventions. These events have sparked debates regarding the necessity of territorialized policing strategies and the adherence to due process during confrontations.
