Osaka Police Shoot Knife-Wielding Man Dead in Kawachinagano

Police in Osaka Prefecture responded to an emergency call reporting a blood‑covered man brandishing a knife near a supermarket in Kawachinagano. Five officers arrived; a 32‑year‑old sergeant warned the suspect to drop the weapon. After the man ignored the warning and continued toward the officer, a warning shot was fired into the air, followed by a second shot that struck the man in the left chest. He was arrested on the spot and later pronounced dead at a hospital. No officers were injured. The incident occurred about 300 metres southwest of Nankai Electric Railway’s Chiyoda Station in a residential area. A nearby Vietnamese witness heard two gunshots and saw the man collapse. Police said the use of a firearm met legal criteria for self‑defence and protection of others, a rare occurrence in Japan, and the case remains under investigation, including the suspect’s identity and motives.
