Police shooting raises death toll to 18 in Brazil's Grande ABC region
A police operation in Santo André on 17 June resulted in the death of a 32‑year‑old driver who allegedly drew a gun after refusing to stop. The man was shot and killed by officers on Avenida Capitão Mário Toledo de Camargo. This incident is the eighth police‑related death in Santo André this year and brings the total number of deaths caused by police interventions in the Grande ABC region to at least 18 since January, an average of three per month.
Data from the São Paulo State Public Security Secretariat show that from January to May the region recorded 16 such deaths, while the same period in 2025 saw 25. The OAB’s criminal law specialist André Lozano criticised the lack of body‑camera use and accountability, saying the state does not discourage police violence. The second‑most affected city, São Bernardo, reported seven police‑intervention deaths in the first five months of the year.
The case is being investigated by the Military Police’s 6th District and will be examined through a police inquiry and portable‑camera footage.
