Central Europe sees spate of road and rail accidents injuring dozens

On Sunday 7 June, a series of vehicle crashes across Central Europe left multiple people injured. In the Swiss municipality of Grünen, an e‑bike rider was seriously hurt after a collision with a motorcyclist on the Bernstrasse; both were flown to hospital, and the road was closed for two hours. In Germany, a 39‑year‑old American motorcyclist suffered severe injuries near Hasloch after losing control on Staatsstraße 2316 and was air‑lifted to a specialist clinic. That same day on the B470 near Eschenbach (Oberpfalz), a Suzuki motorcycle and a car collided, injuring the rider and his passenger while the car driver escaped unharmed. A separate incident on the B70 in Framrach, Austria, saw a motorcyclist strike a police patrol vehicle; the rider required hospital treatment while the police car was unscathed.

Further crashes involved larger vehicles. Near Schwäbisch on the B104, a 52‑year‑old motorcyclist was heavily injured after a frontal impact with a VW, the car driver sustaining minor injuries; damages were estimated at €35 000. In Ulm, a 78‑year‑old cyclist was killed when a tram ran a red signal and hit him at a level crossing. In Bad Neustadt, Unterfranken, a 79‑year‑old driver died after his car overturned and landed on its roof in a field. Finally, near Ingolstadt, a 33‑year‑old driver was killed when his car was struck by a freight train at an unprotected railway crossing; investigators found no fault with the signalling system. All incidents prompted emergency responses and investigations by local authorities.
