Santa Catarina police vehicle hits motorcyclist in Florianópolis

A Highway Military Police (PMRv) vehicle struck a 24-year-old motorcyclist on the SC-403 highway in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, during celebrations for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s presidential reelection victory. Video footage shows the police vehicle crossing a central median and driving into oncoming traffic before colliding with the motorcycle.

The victim was transported to Hospital Governador Celso Ramos, where he underwent surgery and remained hospitalized. While the police reported that the collision occurred during an attempt to intercept motorcyclists performing dangerous maneuvers, witnesses and video evidence suggest the vehicle hit the rider at high speed. Officers involved have claimed the motorcyclist accelerated toward the vehicle rather than braking.

Federal Minister Guilherme Boulos has called for the immediate suspension and arrest of the involved officers. The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) has formally requested clarifications from the Santa Catarina Military Police, the State Public Security Secretariat, and the State Public Ministry. The National Secretariat of Public Security (Senasp) is monitoring the case through a specific task force. The incident has been referred to the PMRv Internal Affairs department for administrative investigation.
