Police warn of criminal behaviour during sex offender protests in Musselburgh
Police Scotland has issued warnings following protests targeting the homes of registered sex offenders in Musselburgh. Authorities stated that while peaceful campaigning is a legitimate democratic right, recent demonstrations have descended into criminal behaviour, including violence, intimidation, and vandalism to vehicles and properties.
Two youths, aged 14 and 15, have been arrested and charged in connection with a disturbance on Stoneybank Avenue. Chief Inspector Benjamin Leathes noted that these incidents, along with the practice of ‘outing’ offenders on social media, undermine public protection measures and divert essential policing resources away from emergency calls.
Police confirmed that retrospective investigations are ongoing regarding property damage and are committed to maintaining public safety while minimizing disruption to the local community.
