Police warn of fake officer scam targeting motorists
Law enforcement agencies are warning against a sophisticated impersonation scam targeting motorists. In this scheme, fraudsters pose as police officers conducting parking inspections. They approach drivers, often in restricted areas, and claim a parking violation has occurred.
To avoid a fine, the fake officer proposes a symbolic payment of 1 euro via a portable credit card terminal. However, once the victim enters their PIN, the scammers use the device to drain significant amounts from the victim's bank account. In one reported case in Périgueux, a woman lost 880 euros through this method.
Authorities advise drivers to remain vigilant and recognize that legitimate law enforcement will not request small cash or card payments via portable terminals to resolve parking citations on the spot.
