Policlinico di Bari implements bioresorbable vascular prosthesis for dialysis

Medical teams at the Policlinico di Bari have successfully implemented a new bioresorbable synthetic vascular prosthesis to provide dialysis access for patients unable to undergo traditional arteriovenous fistula creation using native vessels.

One notable case involves a 57-year-old patient who has used this next-generation implant for approximately two and a half years. Unlike central venous catheters, this biosynthetic prosthesis is progressively absorbed and replaced by the patient's own autologous tissue, eventually forming a new vascular conduit. This method offers improved quality of life by allowing patients to perform daily activities, such as bathing, without the limitations and infection risks associated with traditional catheters.

The nephrology team, led by Professor Loreto Gesualdo, utilizes this technology as a secondary option when native vessels are unsuitable, aiming to reduce infectious and thrombotic risks.
