Policlinico di Catania opens new adult ADHD clinic
The G. Rodolico - San Marco Policlinico in Catania has opened a new outpatient clinic dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults. The service, located within the Psychiatric Clinic complex directed by Antonino Petralia, aims to address a significant healthcare gap in eastern Sicily.
Scientific literature estimates that ADHD affects approximately 2% to 3% of the general adult population, often in individuals who were not diagnosed during childhood or adolescence. The clinic's diagnostic process involves a multi-stage protocol including clinical history collection, neuropsychological testing, and differential diagnosis to ensure accuracy and prevent overdiagnosis.
The facility is managed by psychiatrists Lucia Basile and Ludovico Mineo, alongside psychologist Pasquale Caponnetto. The center is authorized to prescribe methylphenidate for adult patients when clinically indicated. Additionally, the clinic serves as a training site for residents in the University of Catania’s Psychiatry Specialization School. Patients require a referral from a general practitioner and must book appointments through the CUP system.
