Policlinico di Milano administers first approved thyroid eye disease drug in Italy
The Policlinico di Milano has administered the first approved treatment in Italy for thyroid eye disease, an autoimmune condition that affects the eye muscles and surrounding fat. The first patient treated was a 52-year-old man suffering from a rapidly progressing form of Graves' orbitopathy.
The therapy utilizes teprotumumab, a next-generation monoclonal antibody specifically developed for this pathology. Unlike traditional corticosteroid treatments, which primarily manage inflammation, teprotumumab is designed to target the underlying disease mechanisms. This allows it to reduce not only inflammation but also debilitating symptoms such as exophthalmos (eye protrusion) and diplopia (double vision).
Medical professionals at the hospital’s reference center for Graves' orbitopathy noted that the goal of this treatment is to preserve visual function and prevent severe complications that might otherwise require orbital surgery.
