Policlinico di Milano selected for ESA space medicine research

The Policlinico di Milano has been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) to conduct two research projects focused on the effects of extreme conditions on the human body. These studies are funded by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) with a total of 250,000 euros. Notably, these are the only two projects among eight selected by ESA to involve a hospital.

The first project, titled ‘Bed-rest’, utilizes a prolonged bed rest model to simulate the physiological effects of microgravity. The second project, ‘Isolation’, investigates the clinical and molecular consequences of a 100-day isolation period, mimicking conditions experienced on a space station.

According to Nicola Montano, director of Medicine, Immunology, and Allergology at the Policlinico di Milano, the research aims to use the extreme conditions of space as a laboratory for aging. The goal is to observe rapid biological changes that can provide medical insights for the general population, specifically for elderly and fragile patients on Earth.
