Policlinico di Milano surgeons perform two rare pediatric tumor removals

The pediatric surgery team at Policlinico di Milano, in collaboration with the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, successfully performed two complex surgeries on young patients with rare and aggressive tumors within the same week.

The first operation involved an 18-month-old girl with a rare kidney neoplasia that had spread to her liver and diaphragm. Surgeons removed a mass approximately 12 cm in size and weighing nearly one kilogram. The multidisciplinary effort included specialists in pediatric urology, general surgery, and liver transplantation to reconstruct the diaphragm and preserve liver function.

In a separate urgent procedure, a 2.5-year-old girl underwent surgery to remove a 6 cm sarcoma located in the anterior region of her abdomen. The high-complexity operation focused on removing the tumor and reconstructing the abdominal wall.
