University of Pisa implements 3D imaging for complex fracture surgery
The Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Pisana (Aoup) has successfully implemented a new high-definition portable 3D volumetric imaging technology known as Cone Beam CT (CBCT) in its operating rooms. Acquired through PNRR funds by the University of Pisa, the mobile device allows for rapid, detailed three-dimensional imaging that can be moved between different operating rooms and departments.
This technology is specifically designed to assist in orthopedic and traumatological applications. By providing real-time 3D visualization, it enables surgical teams to verify bone reduction and the placement of fixation devices during surgery, allowing for immediate corrections.
A clinical study has been launched to evaluate the use of CBCT in treating complex fractures of the tibial plateau and tibial pilon. The study is coordinated by Paolo Domenico Parchi, director of the Orthopedics and Traumatology unit at Aoup and associate professor at the University of Pisa. The research aims to assess the technology's usability and its ability to improve the accuracy, safety, and appropriateness of surgical procedures.
